Techno track with chopped up vocals.

Word of Mouth is an experimental track built around multiple chopped up vocal samples. The tune grows steadily from a two tone, alternating electronic bass line, and has instruments added like layers as it progresses.

I’m particularly pleased with the production of this track, (especially the kick), which drives it forward and feels as solid as they come. There is a certain power within it I managed to achieve through layering multiple kicks on top of each other, a technique I often use. This approach means the kick sits well on all systems from laptops to clubs, (and everything in between), and this level of production detail is important to me.

The track was composed relatively quickly from the moment I added the vocal samples into my ESX24 software synth and started playing around with it. For me some tracks work in that way, and others require trial and error until the initial usable sound is created, (I must say I much prefer the former).

I’ve used a Korg Volca bass unit at the end and put it’s wonderful VCF (voltage controlled low pass filter) to good use. It enters two thirds of the way through the track and brings it home as the filter is slowly opened up, a sound I always enjoy.
