about

A subterranean Sound is a study of elements within techno. I’ve been contemplating the creation of a track from as few elements as possible for quite some time, and this work is the culmination of that idea.

Each track only has two elements in, and these elements are sculpted from almost nothing to an intense sonic experience within the track, and back, through a multitude of effects. The overarching shape was planned, but the manner in which the effects interact, and the sounds produced were somewhat a surprise.

I was after the subtle inflections produced by a live performance so each track has one live acoustic instrument played continuously throughout, (there are no sampled loop in any of the tracks). Apart from the live aspect I felt each track needed the power, and warmth associated with analogue drum machines, so I chose the MFB Tanzbär for this. It’s a personal favourite of mine, and a staple in my live setup, so I was familiar with it’s unique qualities and able to pair it with the live instruments. To keep the music fluid I chose to record an improvised performance on the drum machine.

The album is a dedication to one of my jazz idols, someone who at first I found difficult to comprehend. As my knowledge grew, so did my ears, and after time I found myself able to understand his work. I don’t want to compare this work to his, so the dedication will stay private, but for anyone reading this I would like to ask for you to give the music a chance. It’s subtle, and almost like a meditation. A deep breath in and a long exhale if you like.

The music is repetitive on the surface and completely different if you push past ‘usual’ listening. If you let your ears do the work I truly believe (I hope), you will be able to latch onto the various patterns that have continuously hooked me as I created it.
